Plant Power

March 24, 2016

Indoor air quality can be 5-10 times worse than outdoor air quality. Think of carpets, glue, computers, printers, ink, and paints etc.

Carbon dioxide in the air is not particularly toxic as it is inert.

But it does make you fatigued and elevated levels put more pressure on your immune system to do its normal job of revitalizing and removing noxious substances from the cells and the vital organs.

Many cities are planting roof gardens to cool down buildings, and to grow foods and plants for consumption and to help offset carbon emissions.

Even concrete walls are being erected and festooned with vines and plants to beautify and to absorb those volatile organic compounds coming out of the back of your car exhausts.

The more the city invests in greening its concrete spaces the better the health and lifestyle for its chocking inhabitants.

We know that plants in our home release oxygen and absorb CO2 and other gasses such as Boron found in concrete and CO found in homes from gas stoves etc. But few of us know that certain plants are able to clean the air from mold, spores and other toxins such as ammonia and formaldehyde. Plants are a necessity not a luxury to have in your office and homes to optimize your health.

Some plants are better than others in cleaning the air and removing the toxins from the room.

These plants also clean the air from dust, paint, and building materials.

Here are 6 plants you should be keeping at home.

Aloe – This plant is great for increasing oxygen levels in the home and absorbing carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.

Formaldehyde (FA) is found in the polluted atmosphere of cities, domestic air (e.g., paint, insulating materials, chipboard and plywood, fabrics, furniture, paper), and cigarette smoke, etc.; therefore, everyone and particularly susceptible children may be exposed to FA.

FA is also widely used in industrial and medical settings and as a sterilizing agent, disinfectant, and preservative.

Nine standard HEPA air purifiers can be replaced with one Aloe Vera plant.

Aloe is also used for treating and healing the skin from inflammatory conditions and burns. Some people even use it for the digestive system to neutralize acids and to balance the flora in the large intestine.

Ficus Elastica – This plant doesn’t need a lot of light and you can maintain it easily.

It is quite effective in purifying the air of formaldehyde found in carpets and wooden floors and furniture. But avoid it if you have pets or small children because its leaves may be poisonous.

Ivy (Hedera Helix) – If you buy this plant, within six hours it will remove 58% of feces particles and 60% of the toxins in the air of an 80 square meter room.

Spider plant (Chlorophytum Comosum) – One of my favorite plants in the house.

This plant is amazing as it is able to perform photosynthesis under minimal light.

It is known to absorb toxins from the air such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, gasoline and styrene.

Styrene is primarily a synthetic chemical, also known as vinylbenzene, ethenylbenzene, cinnamene, or phenylethylene. It's a colorless liquid that evaporates easily and has a sweet smell.

It often contains other chemicals that give it a sharp, unpleasant smell. One Spider plant is enough to clean the air in 100 square meters space.

Snake planet (SansevieriaTrifasciata Laurentii) – This plant is easy to look after and should be kept at home. It can perform photosynthesis under minimal light.

It can be kept in the bedroom as it produces oxygen during the night helping you to sleep more soundly.

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum Mauna Loa) – It is best known for removing formaldehyde from the air as well as trichloroethylene.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a nonflammable, colorless liquid with a somewhat sweet odor and a sweet, burning taste. It is used mainly as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts, but it is also an ingredient in adhesives, paint removers, typewriter correction fluids, and spot removers.

In 80 square meters you will need 3 to 4 of a mixture of these above mentioned plants.

You can also put one in the bedroom because you sleep there. Download Article
